This guide gives employers 2027 salary ranges for hiring full-time Kenyan virtual assistants directly, usually as independent contractors. It covers 16 roles across three experience levels, with costs in US dollars and Kenyan shillings, and explains the local standards that differ from other markets: no 13th month requirement, leave norms, public holidays, M-Pesa payments and backup power. Entry-level general VAs start at $250-400/month. That is above what local call-centre agents earn at entry level (KSh 20,000-35,000/month, or $154-270), which is what keeps good people. Kenya is the most affordable of our three markets for admin and support roles, about 20-25% below the Philippines, and close to Philippine rates for its strengths: content, digital marketing and tech. Experienced writers and social media managers earn $800-1,400/month, and web developers $1,500-2,500/month. Compare the Philippines and South Africa calculators for the same roles.

Kenya vs the Philippines vs South Africa
Kenya is the most affordable of the three for admin and support roles, with stronger English than the Philippines and more overlap with UK hours. South Africa costs the most but offers a full UK workday and the strongest English of the three.

AI and Automation Roles
Kenya is one of the world's main hubs for AI data work: annotating images and text, rating AI answers and testing chatbots. Full-time annotation roles with local firms pay about KSh 20,000-35,000/month, while specialist work on global AI training platforms pays more per hour. That makes Kenyan annotators and LLM QA testers among the most affordable for overseas employers.
For the newer hybrid roles, such as AI automation specialists, chatbot builders and AI-enabled admins, there is no Kenyan salary data yet. We estimate them from local admin and developer rates plus the 20-40% premium that industry guides report for VAs with proven AI skills.

Cost of Living Context
Kenya's minimum wage for a general worker in Nairobi and other major cities is KSh 18,047/month ($139) from 1 May 2026, after a 12% increase. Every range in this calculator sits well above it. Nairobi is the most expensive city; Mombasa and smaller cities such as Kisumu and Eldoret cost noticeably less.
Typical Monthly Budget for a Single Remote Worker
Nairobi
- • Rent (1-bed): KSh 20,000-40,000 ($154-308)
- • Utilities, internet & backup power: KSh 5,000-8,000 ($39-62)
- • Food: KSh 12,000-20,000 ($92-154)
- • Transport: KSh 4,000-8,000 ($31-62)
- • Total: KSh 41,000-76,000 ($316-585)
Mombasa
- • Rent (1-bed): KSh 12,000-25,000 ($92-193)

- • Transport: KSh 3,000-6,000 ($23-46)
- • Total: KSh 29,000-54,000 ($223-416)
These are modest budgets for a single person, estimated by PandaDesk. Popular Nairobi neighbourhoods such as Kilimani and Westlands cost considerably more: one-bedroom apartments there range from about KSh 50,000 to 85,000 a month.
Employment Standards in Kenya
No 13th Month Requirement
Unlike the Philippines, Kenya's Employment Act does not require a 13th month payment. A guaranteed December bonus is uncommon; Kenyan professionals respond better to quarterly performance bonuses tied to clear targets. Use the toggle in the calculator to see the cost of adding a one-month bonus.
Annual Leave and Sick Leave
The Employment Act gives employees at least 21 working days of paid annual leave after 12 months of service, plus paid sick leave. Independent contractors are not covered, but offering something close to the employee standard is the simplest way to compete with local employers.
Public Holidays in 2027
Kenya has 11 public holidays in 2027, plus Eid al-Adha in years when the government gazettes it. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a holiday.
- Fri 1 Jan: New Year's Day
- Wed 10 Mar: Eid al-Fitr (date confirmed by moon sighting)
- Fri 26 Mar: Good Friday
- Mon 29 Mar: Easter Monday
- Sat 1 May: Labour Day
- Tue 1 Jun: Madaraka Day
- Mon 11 Oct: Mazingira Day (observed; 10 Oct is a Sunday)
- Wed 20 Oct: Mashujaa Day
- Mon 13 Dec: Jamhuri Day (observed; 12 Dec is a Sunday)
- Sat 25 Dec: Christmas Day
- Mon 27 Dec: Boxing Day (observed; 26 Dec is a Sunday)
Contractor or Employee?
Most overseas employers hire Kenyan VAs as independent contractors. The contractor registers with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), files their own tax returns and pays their own health (SHIF) and pension (NSSF) contributions, so the salaries above are the full cost. Some employers add a small monthly stipend to cover these. If you hire through an employer of record (EOR) instead, add employer contributions: NSSF at 6% of pay (up to KSh 6,480/month) and the 1.5% Affordable Housing Levy, plus the EOR's fee. Employees also pay 2.75% of salary to SHIF. More on compliance.
English and Time Zone
Kenya ranks 19th globally and 3rd in Africa in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, in the "high proficiency" band, and English is an official language used in business and education. Kenya uses East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year, two to three hours ahead of the UK. An 11 AM-7 PM shift covers the UK workday; US East Coast hours need an evening shift.
Power, Internet and Payments
Kenya Power regularly schedules maintenance outages, often during working hours, so ask candidates about a backup power station or UPS and a mobile data fallback. Pay through Wise with M-Pesa as the delivery method: the money arrives on the VA's phone within minutes. Read more about paying via M-Pesa.
Additional Considerations
- • Budget for an internet and backup power allowance, or confirm the VA already has both
- • Consider software/tools costs, including AI tool subscriptions for AI-focused roles
- • Pay via Wise to M-Pesa; avoid PayPal, which is slow and expensive to withdraw in Kenya
- • Agree whether you pay in USD (the VA carries the shilling risk) or a fixed shilling amount (you carry it)
- • Quarterly performance bonuses and regular raises (5-10% annually) help retention

Do I have to pay a 13th month bonus to a Kenyan VA?

How do I pay a Kenyan virtual assistant?
Most employers use Wise and choose M-Pesa (mobile money) as the delivery method, so the money arrives on the VA's phone within minutes. Bank transfers are slower, and PayPal withdrawals in Kenya are slow and expensive.
Methodology & Data Sources
Published salary data for Kenyan remote workers is thin, so these ranges combine local salary data, freelance rate guides and our Kenya hiring guide. Kenyan local wages run 40-55% below the Philippines (the minimum wage is less than half, and entry-level call-centre pay about 40% lower), while agency and freelance-platform price lists show the two countries at similar rates. Direct hires sit between the two: about 20-25% below Philippine rates for admin and support roles, and close to them for content, marketing and tech. Admin, content, marketing and web ranges match the salary index in our Kenya hiring guide. The 2027 ranges use the most recent data available (late 2026).
